Birchbox Subscription Box Review - February 2015

Birchbox February 2015 Subscription Box

Birchbox is one of the oldest and most inexpensive beauty subscription box. It's probably also one of the most subscribed to (although I am not sure how they are compared to Ipsy, who just reached 1 million subscribers). If you are not familiar, Birchbox sends out 5 beauty samples every month based on individual preferences. Sometimes they include a 6th sample, but they are usually foil packets. Due to the customization, there are many variations in the boxes. The box I am reviewing is based on my personal profile, so you may get something completely different.

Birchbox February 2015 Detail Card

The box comes with a card detailing all of the items. The prices reflect the full-size products, not the sample versions in the box.

Birchbox February 2015 Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle Leave-In Conditioner

Product: Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle Leave-In Conditioner (1 oz)
Retail Value: $2.74

I don’t use leave-in conditioners oftens, so I never buy full-size versions. Since I’ve been getting them in subscription boxes, I have plenty to last me for a while. I tried a spritz of this spray, and it has a nice sweet scent. There’s a whole list of product benefits listed on the bottle: detangler, thermal protector, UV protector, seals cuticle, smoothes hair, locks in color, and adds in shine in addition to being non-greasy, weightless, and of course, conditions.

Birchbox February 2015 BeeKind Shampoo and Harvey Prince Body Cream

Product: BeeKind™ Shampoo (1 oz)
Retail Value: $1.88

I like that this shampoo is free of parabens, phthalates, petroleum-derived ingredients, artificial colors, and dyes. I’m always on the look out for shampoos without harsh ingredients, so I’m interested in trying this one out.

Product: Harvey Prince Hello Body Creme (0.5 oz)
Retail Value: $0.92

The Harvey Prince Hello Body Creme is infused with their best-selling Hello fragrance. The perfume is described as a citrus-floral scent. However, the creme smells relatively sweet, and seem to overpower the citrus notes.

Birchbox February 2015 Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner

Product: Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner (0.03 oz)
Retail Value: $12.00

Eyeliners show up in beauty subscription boxes frequently. I don’t like eyeliner pencils because they feel a little rough on the skin, but this Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner has a rounded tip and more of a crayon texture so it’s smoother. The card didn’t specify the color, but I received the black version which works out for me. This appears to be a deluxe sample since the full-size is 0.04 oz.

Birchbox February 2015 Si[ergoop Daily Correct SPF 35 CC Cream

Product: Supergoop! Daily Correct SPF 35 CC Cream in Light/Medium (0.1 oz)
Retail Value: $2.00

There’s lots of sunshine where I live, so cream with SPF is useful. The Supergoop! Daily Correct Cream also works as a primer and foundation, which is great for someone like me who doesn’t have a lot of time to get ready in the mornings. It’s also got great reviews.

Birchbox February 2015 Coupons

Product: Coupon

There are also some coupons included with the box. The first one is $30 off $75+ purchase from Rent the Runway. The second coupon is for a free Benefit deluxe mini primer with purchase of any full-size Benefit product from the Birchbox shop.

ProductsRetail Value
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle Leave-In Conditioner (1 oz) $2.74
BeeKind™ Shampoo (1 oz) $1.88
Harvey Prince Hello Body Creme (0.5 oz) $0.92
Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner (0.03 oz) $12.00
Supergoop! Daily Correct SPF 35 CC Cream in Light/Medium (0.1 oz) $2.00
Total $19.54

Final Thoughts: I am not super impressed with my Birchbox this month. The majority of the value of this box comes from the deluxe sample of the Cynthia Rowley Beauty Eyeliner. I'm not a fan of eyeliner pencils, but luckily this eyeliner has a smooth texture so I plan on trying to get some use out of it. The other samples are decent, but nothing that really stood out to me from a product standpoint.
